    Missing Help Files

    Missing Help Files

When I enter "recordset" as the keyword and search the Visual Basic Help index,
I get many topics of interest in the resulting list. But there isn't any
information available from clicking on many of the available topics (mostly
methods but some properties are also unavailable). This same problem occurs
with many, if not most, keywords.

Is there any way I can activate these "missing" help topics? HELP!

You don't mention your version of Access, the help files have changed quite
a bit from version to version. If you have Access 2000, this may be helpful:

      Re: Missing Help Files

First, excuse the lack of information in my first post. I am running

Access 2000 (installed as part of Office 2000) and Windows 2000. I am

having trouble accessing many help topics using the Microsoft Visual

      Basic Help.

Thanks for the reference to MS Knowledge Base Article 249065. I already

had SP-1a and SP-3 installed so I copied the five .chm files into the

proper directories as described in the "Workaround " section of the

      article.

After these changes, information is available for a few more topics,

but not for many that I need to use. For example, if I select help from

the Code window, click on the Index tab and enter "recordset" as the

keyword and then click the "Search" button, I get 192 topics in the

"Choose A Topic" list box. Many of these topics have parentheses at the

end of the topic name - (ADO), (ADO Recordset), (ADO Command),

(Recordset Event), (Connection Event), (RDS). I cannot get any

information to display for any title with these parentheses.

      Any more ideas?

      Paul

It sounds as if the ADO help files may not be installed. I believe they come
with the MDAC update. The current one is v2.8. You should be able to find
information on downloading it at www.microsoft.com/data.

          Re: Missing Help Files

          Wayne,

I went to the microsoft site and downloaded the MDAC v2.8 update (and the
inevitable security patch). While looking around the site, I found a Release
Manifest For MDAC 2.8 at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828396
There is a list of the files contained in the MDAC 2.8 release and none of them
look like help files to me.

My application is for personal use on a home computer. All data files are on my
hard drive and I am not on a local network. I am wondering if I need to install
MDAC 2.8. It doesn't seem to me that it will fix my missing help file problem
and I am not sure I need any extra features it provides.

Please correct me if, in fact, the patch does somehow generate the needed help
files (maybe one of the Java or VB Script files?) and I'll install it.

If it won't fix the missing help file problem, is there any other benefit to
          installing it?

If it won't fix my problem, any other ideas where I should look for the help
          files?

Missing topics include "Delete Method (ADO Recordset)", "Reset Method (RDS)",
"BOF, EOF Properties (ADO)", "Execute Method (ADO Connection)", among many
others. Does anyone know the name of the help file with these topics? I'd like
to know what I am looking for.

          Thanks

          Paul

It appears that the help files are in the MDAC SDK, not the driver download.

            MDAC 2.8 SDK

I installed the MDAC 2.8 SDK but it didn't help my problem. I still can't get
Visual Basic help on any topic with (ADO), (RDS), etc. in the topic name. I
REALLY need to access these help topics!

              Anyone have any ideas?

The information is also available at msdn.microsoft. com. I don't have Access
2000 installed to test with, but I don't remember not being able to access
                ADO help.
