Can not repair

Have a user reporting some problems with my app on WinXP home edition + O97

Talking him through a few things on the phone I tried Tools > Database Utilities
> Repair Database

He got a message about already in use on machine Matthew.

Any thoughts ?
TIA

More info would be nice. Is your user 'Matthew', for instance, or is
that machine unknown or known to be elsewhere? I infer from the fact
that your user is using WinXP Home Edition that it may well be a
stand-alone machine, and as such, he may indeed be Matthew, but it
would be nice to know for sure.

A database can appear to be locked by another user if a session fails.
Sometimes, if repair fails, renaming the file, or moving it to a
different folder can help. Also, if all known users are out of the
file, but the tiny ldb companion file is still present, it can be
deleted and then then mdb checked again.

Sounds like the database is locked, i.e., the *.ldb file exists. This needs
to be deleted and to do it he may have to first reboot.

Thanks for the reply.
Trouble is I`m 50 miles from this user who happens to be not the best at
describing what is happening.
He has been using my system on a pc and has just bought a laptop and has
transfered across to that.
Suspect part of the prob is he has not got his head round the wonders of XP. It
was my fault that XP opened with no icons on the desktop !! A quick search
revealed this is an XP thing.
It`s a single user set up. He is matthew but he says there is no log in at
start up so he is not sure who the machine thinks he is.
You say rename the file, is that fe or be you mean ?

I have just yesterday fought this (on W2k). My db was in use by the
system account twice. I am not sure how that happens, but I traced it to
a call to open an external database to run a query in. I closed the
connection, undefined all objects and everything. I gave up in the end
and removed the opening of the external db, carried out the entire
update to it in SQL. No idea what it was.
50 miles is just an hour drive. Might be easiest to do it instead of
guessing. If you tell him to rename files, delete ldb etc, you never
know what he will rename and delete.

If you are working remotely and your user is clueless, as Pavel says,
telling them to delete ldb files, rename other files, etc, may all
backfire badly...

The 'MATTHEW' in the error message relates to his Windows user (and
machine) name and not his Access login. The two are unrelated in
Access.

Well, um, its the corrupted file. You didn't mention which file was
corrupted, but my comments refer to the corrupt file. If a fe/be
setup, you can easily tell which it is by simply attempting to open
the be directly. If it is fine, but you can't open the fe, the fe is
corrupt. If you can't open the be, then the be is corrupt, and most
likely, the fe is fine, and only shows problems because of the be
corruption.

if he's got xp and you've got xp
having him go to
computer properties -> remote -> allow users to connect remotely

then start -> run -> cmd -> ipconfig

then you go to start -> programs -> accessories -> communications ->

do you have 'terminal server client' from an earlier windows OS...
that will connect to an XP remote desktop too..

XP pro upgrade is $300 cdn ... is that worth not having to drive 50 miles ?
