Home movies burned on VHS/DVD player, show blank on computer

I transfer my old VHS movies to DVD on my Magnavox MRV700VR. The problem is that neither my Mac os nor my HP reads it. Always comes up blank. The DVD's I used were DVD+R. Should I have used DVD+RW?

the file it greated from the rendering what format is it in ?

also do you see the video display when you capture the movie via your capturing card?
