Why does second monitor in dual monitor setup only clone the first?

I added second monitor for extended mode for first one, but always I get samething on both like cloning. when I select "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" under display properties, once I click on "aply'ok", the checkbox gets unselected. It never worked in extended mode, one is MAG monitor (old one), I added one old DELL monitor using split cable. any idea?

You can only extend your desktop to two monitors if you are using a graphics card with at least two outputs, connecting one monitor to each output independently.

Splitting a single output using a cable splitter cannot give you two monitor outputs - just the same one repeated, as you have found.
