how do i get linux on windows with vmplayer?

VMware player installed on windows, if I want LINUX/UNIX terminal (shell to compile like regular unix) winodws, do I need to install any other software?. do I need to buy any software?

Go here and download some ready made vmware appliances you can use.

Open the appliance with your player and you should be ready to go.

You can even browse ready made stacks like LAMP. Very easy to use for a beginner or an advanced user.
