Runtime error?

My friend keeps getting a runtime error when he tries to play this game. It freezes his entire comp and he has to shut it down.

He has Windows XP...1gb ram.

Checking with Google I'm mostly finding suggestions to make sure that the maplestory directory and all files contained in it are write accessible.
