RTF, IE6 and PHP

I have been googling, rtfm'ing, rtfw'ing and doing everything I can to
get this working.

Server:
Apache 2.0.50
PHP 4.3.4
PDFLib 4.0.3
MySQL 4.0.17

Client:
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2
IE 6.0.28

The above code is called via http://servername/rtf.php?id=2. This code
works with every browser I try EXCEPT IE 6 and wouldn't you know it,
IE6 is the <cough>preferre d</cough> browser on our LAN.

Whenever I attempt to use this script under IE6, the browser wants to
download the URL instead of the filename (brwrep.rtf). If I
download/view with Mozilla, all is well, I can save the freakin file
and then open it with word without issue.

My travels around google and this news group lead me to a lot of folks
having the same problem, however it would appear that nobody has come
up with a solution.
HOW/CAN this be fixed, worked around or?

Just before the echo line try outputing some headers with the header()
function. Try these two lines:

header('Content-type: image/jpeg');
header('Content-disposition: attachment; filename=logo.j pg');

The first line tells the browser the MIME type for the response so you
will need to adjust that for an RTF file (something like text/rtf I
would imagine), while the latter indicates that the browser will be
receiving a file. However, I cannot guarantee the syntax is correct so
you may have to do some digging for that.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

The header calls are already there...that's the problem, IE appears to
totally ignore them!

Close but no cigar :-). The #$#$ header still isn't passing the correct
filename, instead it's passing the url. Thinking that perhaps the id
was the problem, I temporarily hardcoded the record id into the code so
the url is now someerver/rtf.php. IE still wants to save rtf.php and
not bwrep.rtf. Even trying to save the file (letting IE have it's way
with the filename) results in an error that it couldn't download the
file rtf.php.

Try replacing the comma in 'Content-Disposition: inline,
filename=brwrep .rtf' with a semi-colon.

Chung, changing comma to semi-colon or semi-colon to a comma apparently
makes no difference.

I tried the suggestions from your link Pedro and they didn't change the
behaviour I am seeing. I'm going to be bald before I get this one
solved!

Added two lines and re-arranged the code and now it works! Still
doesn't pass the correct filename, but what the hell, at least I get
the file now! Thanks everyone!

I did a few tests here at work (don't tell anyone) and found this out:



## This works

## Removing the "vnd." from the Content-Type also works

## Specifying "octet-stream" also works

## Replacing the semi-colon by a comma does *NOT* work
header('Content-Type: application/vnd.msword');
header('Content-Disposition: attachment, filename=test.r tf');

## Making the Content-Disposition: inline does *NOT* work
