controlling hardware like door of a room form computer

Can i controle a hardware thing from php. for example i want to open the door of my room by pressing a button in computer.

There are a few DIY sites out there that talk about doing something like this using some industustry specfic hardware; however one uses a WAMP server and PHP to access the interface.
