creating thumbnail in php

hi,
I want to create a thumbnail from the begining of vedio files,so that when someone click the thumbnail , it starts playing the vedio.

Please do not refer me for tools like ffmpeg, I want do it by myself.As I am beginner I want to get the logic behind that.

please help me out. I searched it on net but most of the search result asked me to use this and that tools.

That's because PHP (native) can't do it. You /need/ a tool, plugin or extension of PHP to read video files or create thumbnails.
