How to maintain array values over multiple accesses?

How do I maintain an array over number of different accesses? When ever the page gets refreshed the doctor index maintained by incrementing will be lost right?

Should i make it a global variable? How is it that I maintain it in memory?

        What does the website do?

You could read/write it from a text file or a database.

I would have suggested using Cookies, but that's more of a per user thing.

If its an application run by a hospital, I would assume a database is involved. The right way to do this, in my opinion, is either store these values in a database or create a temp file on the webserver where you can store them and read from them as you want.
