I recommend WordPress for a blog, and perhaps Joomla for a large website with more complete control and many plugins. I have little experience with Drupal, but it seems like that may be more for small-scale blogging.

I think you got it a bit backwards...

WordPress is great for blogging and general CMS work.
As a matter of fact, WordPress has become a very viable CMS platform.

Joomla would be on the second tier.

Drupal is much more robust than Joomla.

They're all resource hogs and each has its pros and cons.
If you'll be developing modules and components, you'll need to understand the MVC pattern to get the most out of them.

For "leaner N meaner" apps, use a MVC framework (CakePHP, CodeIgniter, Zend, Symfony, and others).

All in all, it will make your development & site work easier and is well worth the effort you put into learning.
