coding a search engine

i'm planning to code a search engine as my university project.i would
like to know which language is best suited for this purpose.also
should i host the search engine on a linux or a windows platform.

No.. I lie. You posted this in a PHP group.. do you really expect people
to tell you C, Perl, ASM or something?

This is really down to personal choice, or what you happen to know best.

The only one I would say avoid, is ASP.. but that's 'coz I hate M$ ;)

Isn't that an important part of the project? To decide what technologies to
use?
