Q: Roll Your Own PHP Based Website?

I'm wanting to develop my own enterprise intranet web portal.

I'm very new to PHP and I don't know it well yet, but does anyone have any
suggestions on any docs or books that would be a good guide? I already know
where the general PHP documentation is and the same goes for mysql. Any
documentation or books with lots and lots of examples would be great.

I've considered using phpWebSite and phpNuke, but I don't really want to
spend time figuring out how the portals work. Instead I would like to
increase my skills beyond what little I know after 2 days of learning PHP.

PS- Does anyone know why there is so little documentation with examples on
cross platform authentificatio n? I'm trying to get our company's Active
Directory to merge with a few linux servers I have setup for applications
that require authentificatio n and it's been alot harder than I could have
ever imagined. I'm aiming for as much SSO as possible.

Lots of resources and their books on PHP are excellent, especially for
newbs. Their CSS books are great too.

Unless you have prior programming experience (sorry, _besides_ VB) where
you've coded medium to largish projects, you'll probably need more than
a couple days to absorb php and design anything large effectively. To
me, programming is more than learning the language. If you already can
design a skeleton of your portal site--it's various features, functions,
pages, forms, etc.--the rest is just a SMOP (simple matter of
programming).

Also, unless you're wedded to "rolling your own" as a learning
experience, you might want to take a look at the very packages you
eschew because they can teach you php coding and a medium-large project
design. When I start learning a language, it's easier for me to look at
existing code and figure out what it does. Then, when I can 'think' in
the concepts of the language, I start writing my own projects. But,
different people learn in different ways.

I picked up the O'Reilly Programming in PHP book
(http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/progphp) and was able to start designing
my site the same day. I had prior experience coding in Perl and have
been programing for 15+ years, so YMMV. I also picked up the MySQL
Reference Manual (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mysqlref). I like
having a reference-style manual I can refer to when I want to find out
the definitive information on something.

Once you get comfortable with php, the PHP Anthology Volumes I and II
are _very_ good. They showed me the value of OOP, which is something
for an old-fashioned procedural coder.
