How do you upgrade php on linux?

I need to upgrade php 4.3.7 to version 5.0.0 on slackware linux. Do I
need to uninstall 4.3.7 first or will installing 5.0.0 just overwrite
the 4.3.7 version? I'm running Apache with php.

    thanks,
    Wilfred

Usually, when you configure, then issue a make install, you will end up
    overwriting your current php binaries.
What I normally do is I rename php to the version php4.3.7 and I ln -s to
    php

A new install will now only overwrite the symbolic link.
