Help with PHP + Apachie Recompile

I need to recompile PHP where the output will be a shared Apache 1.x
module. Can I backup the current PHP on the machine in case the
re-compile does not work? If so, what files need to be retained for a
restore?

Any help or pointer to a web site would be a great help!

yes you can back it up,

i don't even have gcc/c++ in production site,
so i just copy the PHP from development to production

ie. you can even recompile it at somewhere else.
