how do I add an environment variable so that php.ini gets it?

I need to add an environemtn variable so that when you run phpinfo(), it
displays under ENVIRONMENT,

aspell variable and value = location of executabel

Anh ideas - it might be a linux question more than a php one but your help
is nonetheless appreciated!
