    Web built using PHP scripting

    Hi,

I was asked to take over a web application that written using PHP
scripting. The applicaiton is used for monitoring server & network
availability and perforamnce. There is no documentation for this
application and I'm new to PHP.

What should I ask from the hand over person before he leave?

    Thanks in advance.

    Some documentation?
Or at least a list of 'tips and tricks' so you get a better start.
If you are lucky the PHP code has good commentlines itself.

Personally I think you should consider saying: 'no' because you have no
experience with PHP, and the damned project is not documented.
This is asking for trouble, and you will be on the receiving end.

On the other hand: This could also be an oppertunity to proof yourself and
learn a lot of PHP during the process.

Ask him for the named & number of someone who can do the work.
Really now, if you're unfamiliar with PHP then you're the wrong person for
      the job.

To generate documentation for the application?

Flow diagrams? Descriptions of what each file does. A day to sit and
          talk about the program?

Then you are probably not a good person for the job...

Full documentation (user manual, administrator manual, developer
manual, comments in the code). That will keep them busy for a few
months, giving you enough time to learn PHP properly. :)

            Cheers,

Manager speak for giving you a job that you don't have the time, resources
                  or information to complete...

I recall a job being referred to as a good training opportunity. It was not
shadowing anyone else. That sounded like it had more responsibility but no
                  recognition.
