My dad wants PHP & MySQL or pgSQL hosting

To my surprise last month, my dad wanted to start dabbling in PHP and
MySQL or pgSQL. I've been helping him out a bit. He's into athletic
medicine and wants to have a website to help athletes and physical
therapists improve performance. His current web hosting provider --
Earthlink -- doesn't give him anything but PHP 3.0.x. I want to get
him at least on PHP 4.2.x (or better) along with either MySQL or
    PostgreSQL (pgSQL) support.

I've done some googling on this, but I wanted real user opinions on
cost, customer support, uptime, etc. At this point he's just looking
at something that suits him somewhere between hobbyist and early sole
proprietorship strength. Shared web hosting would suit him fine. Cost
might be an issue for him initially.

He's going to need some sort of simplistic web interface to be able to
create databases, tables, and user accounts.

      php version: 4.3.2 with mySQL

very good price, very good support, 800 megs of available space .User
management interface (vdeck) is excellent. mySQL interface is phpMyAdmin
      which is easy all right.

I use it for five months and love it so far.

I've had a good experience so far with http://www.just-hosting.com. About
maximum 48hr response time on service emails, but they're dependable. A
basic package... FTP for uploads, cpanel controlled, comes with a
          something-or-other-NIX SSH shell.

I've had a horrible experience with http://www.superuser.net/ . Beware of
it and sites with the exact same template. (I'm pretty sure the guy runs a
lot of web hosting companies). 'Tis my own fault for expecting something
that good that cheap, but still...

          Best of luck!

I've had pretty good luck with http://www.acehost.com. Regular and
anonymous FTP, PHP 4.3.4, MySQL, cPanel, JailShell SSH command line access,
            etc.

              I cant speak highly enough of www.phpwebhosting.com - 9.95 a month and
you get as much space (225mb initially), email accounts, mysql DBs as
you like. MySQL administration is via phpmyadmin or you can use your own
(such as mysqlfront (http://www.mysqlfront.de)). Only issue is that they
are still using mysql 3.x ;-(

Overall they provide great value and service.

Plus they provide a ton of other support. Like affiliate status, a marketing
                solution and much more.

www.uklinux.net, but don't expect a lot of support from them. However
                  the price is very good.

They use PHPMYADMIN to provide the web interface you mention above.

I also suggest he gets Apache, PHP, MySQL & PHPMYADMIN going on his own
PC to test it all there before uploading it.
