Good Web Image-Editing Software That Isn't Too Expensive?

Hi,

I'd like to do some basic graphics. For example, if you look at:

http://www.marshallaviationcenter.com

the banner graphics at the top that apparently used an image editor with
some fonts built in and the way the airplane pictures are faded around the
edges.

I've heard that Adobe PhotoShop is the gold standard, but that is $500
(about $300 more than I'm willing to spend).

Can anybody recommend a graphics package for Windows that will help with
basic web image editing tasks and isn't so expensive?

Paint Shop Pro (was from Jasc, now part of Corel).

Actually there are lots of hobby users who can pretty much do anything
they want with a image app .

Most of them would jump at the chance to make a few bucks from their
hobby & the chances are they would do a much better job of it than
yourself .

No offence intended of course .

If you do make a request for a artist - just make it clear you arnt
looking for somebody who charges commercial prices .

Part of this of course is the time factor as regardless if buy PS or PSP
you will need to spend quite a while learning how to do anything useful
with them - or to get the effect your looking for .

I didnt like the way the other short urls websites automatically take
you to the end destination and I like to see a url and know where i'm
going before I click on it .

It's amazing that nobody has mentioned the GIMP. The user interface is
kinda mediocre, but the fact is, it's a very powerful program with some
first-rate tools.

Oh yeah, it's free (yay open source!).

You'll need to download two files:
GTK+ (a graphics library, install this first)
Gimp 2.2.8

If you want to do vector graphics, instead of raster graphics, then
you'll want to try inkscape.

You don't need Photoshop -- it's got all sorts of features that you're
simply never going to use.

There's a scaled-down version called "Photoshop LE" that is perfectly
adequate for this sort of thing. And since this software is bundled with all
sorts of Adobe applications, you can pick up legal unregistered copies at
eBay for next to nothing.

Photoshop Elements, about $100 last time I was at Office Depot. Still a very
powerful program. I use it all the time, and I have the full version of
Photoshop.

The nice part is that the interface is almost identical, so if you ever had
the chance or need to use Photoshop, you wouldn't be too lost.

DrawPlus, from Serif, is simply marvellous. It's a vector drawing program,
which generates images which scale without loss of quality - a bit like
illustrator at a fraction of the cost. It will also import raster images
(bitmaps, jpegs, etc) but isn't geared up to do photo editing (they have an
application called PhotoPlus which does that). DrawPlus has a huge number
of fonts built-in, and has facilities for complex fills, transparency - the
list is very long. I see it as a complement to photo-editing software -
it's a drawing package - but I'm using it more and more in web work. See
