Sorry to join what must be harsh criticism.

Your test scores aren't very impressive - I don't know how hard the schools
that you attended are, but on paper, anything under 70% shows that you
really only did just enough to get through - you're middle of the road -
you'll do your 9-5 and go home. Best to leave your test scores off.

The long term, short term, personal goal stuff is just stupid. Sure, you're
ambitious, but I want someone who can do a task for me now. Best to leave
that off too

Projects are of interest to me because they prove your ability - but there's
only one - Did you seriously spend 3 months on that project? (where I am 10
/3 / 2005 = 10 March 2005) How many hours did you spend on the project
during that time?

Your technical skills are of interest to me, list them first and then show
them demonstrated in your list of projects - if you haven't done a project
with the skill - you have no commercial experience - regardless of how good
you are at the skill.

We don't care what your fathers name is.

What you need is projects that prove your ability, and get you references.
Find small projects - offer to work for free for non-profit organisations.
Don't give away too much of your time though - you don't want to be taken
advantage of and it is an easy trap to fall into.

Personally contact organisations that may employ you with an introduction
letter asking for a meeting, follow up with a phone call - even if the
organisation isn't looking, it shows that you are a go getter. See if the
person you're meeting with may know of any other organisations that may be
interested in talking to you.

Tell your parents, friends, relatives, the person at the corner store that
you are looking for some work in IT.

Get yourself a business card, and give yourself a position - IE Suresh Babu
Mandalapu, PHP Programmer. That way if you're talking to someone and you
swap numbers with them, give them your card - you look professional - it
might get you a small job and more experience that you can put on your
resume to score that company job you are after.

There is a book out there called "What colour is my parachute". READ IT.

Advice on PHP career ( was Re: help me to get a job on PHP)

Since the subject has been raised while I'm actually thinking about it -
maybe some of you guys would be willing to help me out a bit. I'm making
something of a career change: I've been doing web design part time for a
long time and I am very interested in getting into PHP development full-time
now.

I have no degrees or formal education, but I do have a BrainBench PHP Master
certification (FWIW). For reference, my current resume (which probably needs
fixing in all sorts of ways) is at

One of my problems is that I've been self-employed for some time, and I've
found many employers don't seem to like that ("too independent"). Another is
that I'm 38 - quite a bit older than the typical applicant for an
entry-level position :)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
