Web-based Foum / Message Board History?

Can anyone possibly point me to, or give me a history of web-based
message boards. There is a lot of information on BBSes Fidonet IRC etc,
but I can not seem to find anything on message boards. Just for
clarification, by message boards I mean phpBB, eXtreme Message Board,
etc; The kind of thing that is implimented on slashdot.
