    Oracle upgrade advice

Our client is looking into upgrading our oracle version (7.3.4) to the
latest oracle version, would it be advisable to go straight to 10g
(release end of this year) or is it better to stick with 9i?

Current platform: Oracle 7.3.4 on Win NT 4

    Thanks,
    Leigh

Suggestion: do some homework to see whether the feature list in 10g
meets your needs. You can get a lot of info at http://otn.oracle.com
    and look under 'Products' >'Database'.

Based on what I see, I will be encouraging migration to 10g reasonably
soon. I happen to believe in the 'lots of small boxes in a grid' mode
of operation more than 'one huge honkin SMP box'. (Then again, I also
believe that the true cost of a product includes it's 3-5 year
    maintenance cost.)

For an organization just moving from 7.3.4, I'd suspect you will be
satisfied with Oracle9i Release 2, at least for a few years. Unless you
really want to optimize your investment, you probably will not be
looking at using any of the more advanced Oracle9i capabilities.
