Unable to set proxy settings in my web browser

My workstation is connected to a LAN and can access the internet through "direct connection to the internet". what I need to do is to be able to access a site using a proxy because I am testing a remote server. but when I change the proxy settings in my browser to manual. The browser does not seem to connect to the site and nothing is displayed. any help is welcome. thanks

What browser are you using, and did you try to:

Change the proxy settings, close, and re-open the browser
Clear the cache and temporary files, close, and re-open the browser
Use a different browser

problem solved. turned out the proxy was not working. tried out other proxies. thank you very much.
