DNS problem with Networking XP to Vista

I have a Ethernet Network between an XP Computer and Vista Computer.
I have internet service on both via a Router and a DSL modem.
I'm trying to get them to "shake hands",
I had it in one of my attempts but lost it.
Anyhow I'm trying to rename on the XP, it asks for a DNS.
    I did a dnslookup and got nnn.nnn.nnn.nn.
I entered that in the requested box in XP and got
the first character must not be a number.
I'm confused. Why doesn't the dnslookup number work?

Does this work going 'straight through' without the router in between the XP PC and the DSL modem? If it does, you can verify the DNS by going to Start->Run then type in 'ipconfig /all' .

Doing a lookup only gives the IP of a device - it really depends on what device you looked up. My guess is a mis-configuration between your router and your modem, but as soon as we verify that your modem is working we can check that stuff out.

As it turns out it was the Norton firewall that needed a "pass through"
for the other computer's IP address. I think that if the Microsoft error had
read "can not find xxx" rather that "invalid host name", I would have been
much closer to the answer. I sure am learning a lot by using this forum.
