I have recently come across a problem in Vista when trying to add it to a network. This is the first time I have had this problem and I haven't found anything relevant on google. I'll try my best to explain the problem:
I work for the IT department for all the local schools in my area. 9 schools are connected via one network. We use linux Samba servers and as an extra precaution we don't allow it's name to be visible. On XP it automaticly connects once we allow the mac addres on the server. The problem was when one of the teachers wanted to connect his home laptop. It's an acer (I can't remember what model) with Vista Home edition. When me and my colleague connect the laptop to the network we were unable to find an option for LAN. We shown the choice between Ppoe connection, wireless LAN or dial up connection, which are not what we need. Vista has detected the network but lists it as unknown network. The Samba server sends Vista an IP but it refuses to accept too. Is there any way to fix this problem and connect to LAN? If so I would be greatful.
