DirectSound Monitor Sound Output

Hello all,

Is there a way to monitor the output of the soundcard? I'm trying to have a VU meter for the output of the sound card - including all sounds from all programs running. I've found ways to monitor the capture devices, but how do I record a sample from the output line? Thanks.

perhaps using the winmm.dll ? or possible, not positive, some kinda WMI code ?

I've looked through the winmm.dll and didn't see anything that would allow me to get that. I'm using directx right now to capture audio on the input line, but DX doesn't seem to have controls to monitor the output.
