When is an xp disk not an xp disk? sfc doesn't like it!?!

I have been having some difficulties with my pc which I purchased some time
ago, refurbished with xp pro sp2 preinstalled, and product key on the case,
but no disk. I activated xp pro sp2 with no probs and at first it ran fine
for a month or two, before I started having trouble with all browsers.

I had tried to run sfc /scannow but was told I needed to insert the disk to
copy files that it needs to run properly.

Now I have just bought a new sealed OEM XP Pro sp2 cd (with another product
key I don't need) but when I run sfc /scannow it prompts for the cd but
doesn't seem to recognise the xp disk and wont copy the required files - so I
    have to skip.

The disk seems to work fine and the autorun menu starts up with no probs,
and I can browse the files.

    Any clues please?
