I have two tables in the same mySQL database. I need to have table_b updated automatically with data from selected columns in table_a when new rows are added to table_a. Is this possible? If so, how do I achieve this?

This is possible using triggers. Have a look at this MySQL Triggers. Specifically you would want to create a Trigger on insert.
