    Why does MySQL not open?

Recently I downloaded the latest version of MySQL for
32-bit, installed it. No errors installing it. When I
go to run it though, all it does is flash a DOS-like
window for a fraction of a second and that's it.

Okay, here is what I am doing and the operating system
info... I am running XP Home Addition with SP3. In the
windows explorer, i am double-clicking on the mysql.exe
    file when this oocurs.

Does MySQL require that you be in a CMD shell? Or run
    in DOS?

(The DOS-like window lasts a little longer in a CMD shell,
but still does nothing, even for mysqladmin.exe,
    mysqlmanager.ex e, and mysqltest.exe.)

    The files I installed were:
    mysql-5.1.50-win32.msi
    mysql-essential-5.1.50-win32.msi

    Is it a memory issue?

you need to confiure the my.cnf files.

also you need to run mysqlmanager.ex e as admin same as other .exe

you need to have an admin account in order to achive full working mysql.

if that doesn't succed you can download and install wampp its all setup in one directory for a newbie its easy to start with. unless you want the tideous work right away! if so then have your knee high boots on, cause its about to get serious, start the coffee pot, and grab your glasses and note pad cause you will have a lot to learn!

    manual for mysql
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/index.html

    xampp link ( easier )

windows install help ( configuration )
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/...tallation.html

    hope this helps!

As far as I'm aware, on Windows, you can start MySQL by either running "mysqld-nt.exe" or opening it as a Service in the background. This makes the database available for communication.

Only then will "mysql.exe" show you your command prompt.

I have 3 shortcuts on my desktop for MySQL on my Windows XP PC:
      MySQL: C:\path\to\mysq l\bin\mysqld-nt.exe --console
      MySQL Prompt: C:\path\to\mysq l\bin\mysql.exe -uusername -p
      MySQL Shutdown: C:\path\to\mysq l\bin\mysqladmi n.exe -uusername -p shutdown
