    vim on my Mac mini...

    When I edit a file directly on my mac mini using vim (in a Terminal session), I have a problem inserting a number.

    When I , i.e. enter a '3', it will insert a new line above the line where is was, and start this line with an 's'. When I type a '2' a 'r' is show, when typing a '1' a 'q' is show.

    Above does not happen when I use vim via an ssh session

    Does anyone have any hints on how to solve this?

    and, if I type after the prompt the '3' works normally

    $ echo $TERM
    xterm

    A Mac does not know how to handle correctly a PC keyboard.
    (because a Mac seems to have (or had?) more function keys than a PC)

      Check your system fork... PC keyboards work just fine under VIM and on the Mini...
      MS-PC Keyboard on Mac Key Mapping

      Some third party applications can interfere with proper operations...

        ok, problem was that I used the mini via a VNC connection.

        When using the PC keyboard direct on the mini it works OK.
