For a non-root user, how do I find packages installed in solaris.

I am using Solaris 5.8 at work, and I do not have admin privileges. I wanted to know how can i find out what packages are installed. For example, if I want to find the vim package and if the version I am looking for is not in my "PATH".

Well, I can't tell you how to go about looking through the package lists, but you can try this command and just brute force search for vim...

    Code:
    find / -name vim -print
Good luck. As editors go, vim rules!

If the above doesn't work, you can try

      Code:
      whereis vim
Not sure if this runs on solaris, but it's worth a shot and then if either the find or whereis command shows you the vi executable, you can do

      Code:
      echo $PATH
      to print your path

        Hi!
Personally, I'm not a solaris user myself, but from what I've found the program pkginfo is intended for that sort of task (seemingly with the -x option, if you want to have information like the version) and I wouldn't be surprised if you could use that even when not root. So,
        Code:
        pkginfo -x vim
        may do the job.

        Greetings,
        Nepomuk
