How to boot in single user mode?

    Hi everyone,

I've been facing a problem with one of my RHEL 4 box. Due to a recently power failure i am not able to get the system to work as usual.

I've configured RAID1 as well as LVM2, the problems is that soon after the power failure the system is not able to detect any valid Linux partition. It sends a TERM signal that says 'Kernel Panic' and the system goes to halt.

I've tried to boot into Single User mode by modifying the grub loader, nothing seems to be working. I tumble upon a web link that says i could perform the LVM repair method by selecting the repair option while booting from the installation media. I don't have a copy of the installation cd/dvd with me anymore. I couldn't find the .iso images anywhere on the web as well.

Is there any other method to deal with this problem? All i need is boot the system in single user mode. I have all the sufficient notes on fixing the LVM & RAID issues respectively.

Please suggest a best approach known to you, many thanks.

What happens when you pass "single" argument to kernel?

      Hi there,

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

It is still going into normal boot, for some reason it is not accepting "Single" argument.

If there is any argument named 'splash' remove it..
change 'ro' to 'rw', also add 'init=/bin/sh' argument. And yes, keep 'single' as it is.

        Give it a try..
