Unable to install linux on hard disk

Hello, linux newbie here. PLZ HELP.
I recently downloaded DSL (Damn Small Linux) ISO image from the internet and couldnot install it to hard disk. Live CD works fine on my PC. I have 2 partitions C: and D: (both 20 GB). How to install linux on D: and do I need to uninstall windows XP which is already installed on C: drive.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE TO EVERYONE.......

You can have dual boot, not an issue.

    no need uninstall the XP.

but if you install linux in D Drive , the drive and the contents can not be seen in windows [because the file types are different which windows will not be able to identify] and also the data will be erased before installing.

select D: and format it and organize the drive with the following file systems with req size

    /
    /var
    /home
/swap double the size if u r RAM
    /boot
    /usr

let me know if it helps or you need more information.
