    Why is IE8 adding "contenteditable"?

Okay, I have a wordpress blog (.org) and using IE8. I've noticed using Firebug that in Firefox and Chrome, everything works as planned and the code looks exactly the way I want it.

    However, in IE8
    Code:
    contenteditable="inherit"
is added to every line of code. Note that I can only see this when I view the code with Firebug Lite in IE. If you simply view source, this contenteditable isn't visible.

As you can imagine, this makes things pretty screwed up on my blog. But it's not only my blog, it's others that I've checked out. They seem to have this code change as well resulting in the same behavior. I checked this on my machine (windows 7) and my wife's (vista) both with IE8 and the issue is present in both places. I've run IE in "safe mode" to disable any add ons and that didn't solve the problem.

Question is whether this is a local issue or something specific to IE. I talked to one person who was looking at the same site as me and has the same OS and IE version and he's not having the same problem.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

    My site: http://www.doseofdigit al.com

    Thanks for any help.

    Best,
    JMR

As you said you can only see this when using Firebug so I think it is specific to Firebug. Firebug allows you to change element styling on the fly and perhaps the IE Lite version will allow you to also change content on the fly.

The contenteditable attribute is part of HTML 5.

I don't think this is anything to worry about.

Let me re-phrase. The page is rendering wrong in IE8 and I couldn't figure out why. I tried Firebug to see if I could figure it out and that's when I noticed the contenteditable coding. So, I'm not just trying to fix something that doesn't look right in Firebug. My site is messed up in IE8 and Firebug was supposed to help me figure out what.

Okay, what part of your site doesn't look right in IE8?

Actually, never mind my site. Now that I'm paying attention, it's a lot of sites. This might be a better example:

This is what one part of Twitter looks like for someone I don't follow in Chrome and FF:

This is what the same area looks like in IE8 on my computer:

In the IE8 version, the "Follow" button that is seen in the Chrome image is pushed to the far, far left of the screen floating on it's own and I can only see it if I maximize on a widescreen monitor and scroll over.

Thinking it's a local issue, but can't be sure. If it is local, how do I fix it? Also, how to I ensure that people looking at my site that might have the same local issue don't see all the errors on my site caused by this issue?

          Hope that makes sense.

          Thanks.

I still don't know what your issue is as you haven't explain what part of your site is not appearing properly.

Each IE8/IE rendering issue is going to be different. The issue on twitters site is likely different than your issue unless you are both using the exact same markup and css which is doubtful.

I also can't tell you if it is local or not because again I still don't know specifically what your issue is.

On a side note, IE in all it's versions has never been standard compliant. While web developers strive to make sites that are standard compliant and will render the same in standard compliant browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera, IE still needs certain tweaks to make it behave properly.

Depending on the developer of the site they may or may not have made the necessary changes to make the site compatible with IE.

Okay, sorry. I thought the Twitter example would be more helpful. On my site, this is what the top of a post looks like on FF and Chrome:

In IE8, it looks like this:

As best I can figure, in IE8 the float:left style is being ignored.

I have a few others like this if you need more examples, but this is the general idea.

                Thanks.

Yes, but this doesn't explain why I see the problems using IE8 on my laptop and a friend doesn't see it using the exact same version of IE8 on his laptop (with the same OS).

That's the part that's making me crazy.

Try doing a hard refresh on your laptop. Ctrl+F5.

I checked both FF and IE8 here and I am not having the issue either so it does appear to be a local issue.

Okay...tried the hard refresh, but that didn't work. However, I did try using InPrivate browsing in IE8 and everything was fine on my site, but the Twitter example was still messed up.

                      That's even odder. No?

EDIT: Cleared history, cookies, etc as well and now InPrivate is rendering the wrong way.
