Blank Space on Front Page of Website

I am trying to fix a problem with the above site myself - I have limited html knowledge so plain-english answers are appreciated!

There is a huge space between the featured large image on the front page and then the columns of articles below that image. Any ideas of how to get rid of that blank, white space?

there are a lot of empty elements below that images (2x <h1>, 1x <h2>, 6x <p>). there might be something wrong with filling those elements with text.
