Can CSS be used to outline an area map on hovering?

I have several images, each with several area maps. I'd like to know if there's a way to have the area map shown as a border when it's hovered over; I know it can be done easily with images but I haven't been able to crack it with area maps.

Alternatively, is there a way to create the outline as a .png or a .gif and have it laid over the image? I had a nice Javascript set up so that the images were replaced onMouseover, but the file sizes are getting ridiculous.

    Thanks for your help!

Have a look at jQuery and inparticular an addon called Map Hilight. It looks like a neat script which does what you want, but I have not tried it myself.
