    OT ping Dorayme, Virtual Gallery

I've made a "virtual gallery" of my photo show. It's rough around the
edges still, but I think it's basically there.

The idea is more to give a feeling of the live exhibit than to be a
    conventional web page.

I don't think anyone else (other than Dorayme) will be interested.
I'm aware of most of the complaints the regulars here will have with it.

I like the idea of the gallery wall and clickable images and details,
You might be able to work it so the two pop up windows can close on one
click, allowing the viewer to work less?

Oddly, I originally set it up that way, then changed to separate after
      I tried it.

Thanks for the look. I'll consider changing it back. Perhaps closing
both when the image window is closed as there is little reason to have
      the description open alone.

Since I wrote all this, it's no problem to alter. BTW, I'm sure you
      realize that isn't a popup, it's a moveable div.

            voluntarily.

You will realise that those who are irritated by things popping up and

Jeff, Consider not having *two* pop-ups. I like the idea of the gallery
and clickable hangings. I don't really mind the enlarged pics and info
appearing on top of the page (at least it works fine on my Safari and
FF). But two popups is a bit much and looks too gimmicky. Just my
            opinion.

And i would not have the popup on the opening page at all, not just
stuck there without any action by the user. It looks literally
*uncalled* for. Perhaps you coul have the info there integrate with the
actual home page there? Up to you.

Jeff, Consider not having *two* pop-ups. I like the idea of the gallery

It's a tough call. There's quite a bit of info associated with all the
larger pics, It tough to get all that in one bit without having scroll
city. With the double you can push things around or close what you don't
need. Perhaps changing the zIndex so one falls under the other, Dunno...

As far as gimmicky, this is a show about one person, a 75 year old
guy at that! Is that not gimmicky?

For myself, the descriptions are important. If you have to lay your
mouse on them, at least you've been forced to notice them. Ever wonder
about all those adverts that fall out of magazines? Just the act of
picking them off the floor gets more notice to them than if they were
              attached.

Would you just blow through everything, if it was easier? If the
content is compelling enough, I think you can get away with this, if
it's just more blah blah blah, then your viewers would be gone shortly
              afterward anyways.
              >

I tried it without, but I think the "popups" are different enough
that they require some explanations. There's enough going on there that
embedding something on the wall could likely just get lost there.

I'll give this some more thought.

In the meantime, since this went up this morning, I've had three more
sales. Flapjack Twincakes sold not long ago, and two others are going to
              Sweeden.

info, it is nice to have a normal link that takes me there. The thing I
do not like about too much popping up is the feeling of being foisted

This involves going from brief with link, to less brief with link to
very detailed. Just like with links from thumbnails to larger to even

You pointed out, not so long ago, that popups remind people of spam and
pushy selling and ads and stuff. It is not to the point that your popups
are not powered in the usual js separate little window way.

Frankly, I am comfortable enough about the pics being enlarged as popup
on the page (perhaps with a short caption with link to more spiel). But
                no more!

This I admire a lot! But these are html/css groups <g>).

leveraging stuff. Meaning: to manage it and dole it out as requested.
This involves going from brief with link, to less brief with link to
very detailed. Just like with links from thumbnails to larger to even
                  larger...
The back end of this is actually my shopping cart module. It's nearly
trivial to set this up exactly that way. A row of thumbs with a brief
description and then a link to "more". Now, instead of feeding a thumb
template, I'm feeding an AJAXED div. It's pulling data back through the
                  SKU.

Yawn... I may add that option at some time. Right now, I'm not aiming
at a generic, lets get through all this quickly, type crowd. Right now
I'm trying to get more people to go see the Exhibit and I don't feel
that something quicker is going to do the trick. So far, I've been right.

I'm pushing to get a few art reviewers down. It's going to be tough
as the view is so narrow. The New Yorker once wrote glowingly of some
footage Steve had done for a Wim Wenders Blues documentary (he had the
only film of a well know musician). The local critic just sniffed and
asked how he knew Wenders (Wenders found him). I asked a well known
photographer here to go see the show, and his only comment was if I knew
how *he* could get a show!

A lot of this is about preservation of status and the status quo from
                  the perceived threat.

If the website was about a murderer, you would not include anything that
could cause someone's death because, after all, it is about murder. <g>

But
                  no more!
Well, perhaps for you I will add that, but not right now...

(btw. I am reluctant to criticize the only online guy I know who
actually gets off his arse and takes pics and sells them and has shows.
It's a different attitude about marketing. All the advice you will get
in these groups comes from people that don't want to me marketed to!
                  Think about that.

I had to sell some work. I had quite a bit of expense in putting this
together. As far as I know the record for number of sales at Eyedrum is
somewhere around 1. I've been to a lot of similar gallery openings,
nobody ever sells anything. I've seen Arnold Newman sell almost nothing
at a fabulous show (I bought a book and my girlfriend a Georgia O'Keefe
                  poster).

This I admire a lot! But these are html/css groups <g>).
                  Thanks,
                  Jeff
