Difference between domain.com/folder vs folder.domain.com ?

What is the difference between

http://extensions.exam ple.org/

and

http://www.example.org/extensions

Do they provide different functionality? Or are they just two ways of doing the same thing?

Two ways of doing the same thing, except one is a subdomain and the other is just a different directory off your main domain. It's all how you present it to the user.

Also, if you run extensions off a different server then it would be more appropriate to use a subdomain.
