    Can’t extract backup from zip

I created a backup of a portion of my hard disk which amounted to 11MB. I want to restore this backup but when I double click the file it says : Cannot open file : It does not appear to be a valid archive.
Is there still a way to recover this file? One of my hunch is that this file was made with a lower version of winzip than the one I am using now. Is winzip backward
compatible? Could the newer versions open files made from older versions?
Is it possible to know what winzip version a file was made from?

Update your WinZip app and see if it works or not.

Try installing 7zip to uncompress the file in question. another reason for this error can be that the backup file is corrupted and it can not be extracted.

If your file was password protected and you lost it you can try and open it using fzc.exe or azpr.exe (both from DOS).
If you used older zip programs you might try PKZIPFIX to reconstruct corrupted file and PKUNZIP to extract from the result. Again from DOS.
If the file was saved in other formats try WINACE, it will open almost anything compressed.
Also I hope this recommendations can help you somehow.
