Sony Vaio desktop does not recognize DVD/CD writer

Generally speaking there are two probable reasons for this: Either the driver is not installed probably or the hardware is defective; this may just be a loose cable but could also be something more difficult to fix. My suggestion would be to reinstall the Driver for the DVD/CD writer (you should find that on the Sony support page) and if that doesn't work to have it checked by someone who has dealt with hardware before.

Like nepomuk said try re-installing the hardware, and you might never know the writer itself might got a problem. To be sure that it's not writer, try loading it on another driver
