How does an antivirus use virus signature to detect a virus?

Hi

Plz tell me how an antivirus uses virus signature to detect a virus? Till now , I only came to know that there is some Pattern matching algorithm to detect a virus..
But i want to know that how an antivirus convert the file to binary format to match it with virus signature?

Usually, A signature has virus code location and address in it. The code that identified as malicious script are record in signature. Thus, those file that infected or mutated or whatever you call it are contain the address or code, will be recognized as a virus.
