Windows Installer Keeps Popping Up - Office 2007

I have a question for Beth Melton.

Hello. This is Ray. I read an answer you graciously gave to another user about the constant popping up of "Windows Installer - Preparing to install". I cannot find anything to eliminate this headache and would be grateful for your insight and suggestions.

Many people suggest running something like Windows Install Clearner (not sure that's the correct name), but on the ms website about it, we are specifically instructed to not run that fix with Office 2007, so I respect their advice and have not tried that.

This problem began right after I installed Office 2007 suite. I am running XP on a Dell Inspiron with Office 2003 previously and still installed. After Office 2007 successfully installed from the original disc, I was running several updates associated with the applications in Office 2007 from the ms site when my laptop battery died. Obviously something did not install correctly. It may have been the Office 2007 Service Pack, but I am not sure.

"Preparing to Install" pops up all the time now, when I open any Office 2007 application or open Internet Explorer or click on a link, slowing my computer. Hitting cancel does nothing. Sometimes Internet Explorer opens when I have not clicked on that icon.

I wasted money and a huge amount of time on the phone with ms technical services. Three different people (in India, so they were very hard to understand) knew nothing about this problem; one took over my computer for a couple of hours and ran eventvwr and did something with the registry and thought she had done something to fix the problem, but had not. It lives on to torment me.

On her suggestion I completely uninstalled Office 2007 and reinstalled it successfully and then downloaded successfully some of the updates from the ms site. I have done that twice, even the Service Pack downloaded successfully this time.

I have no idea which application update was aborted originally when my battery died.

If you or anyone else out there can help, I would be immensely grateful. I do not understand computers well enough to understand some of the suggestions I found online, but none of them specifically adress this problem with Office 2007.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

    Ray
