How can i tell if restore is actually running?

    hi all,
    we are on 8.1 /Windows 2003
unfortunately our DBA left the company and our database got damaged, we have no other employee with db2 experience
did a restore (using the GUI) to existing database using last full backup and roll forward to the previous morning
the database is 30 gigs and the restore has been running for 16 hours,
how can i tell if it is actually still running

    thanks for the help!

    Hi,

Couple of things to tell weather a restore is running or not. Frankly speaking 30 gigs restore and rollforward shouldn’t take more than 2-3 hours providing a good setup. Even if there is a complex environment it shouldn’t take more than 10 hrs.

    1) open db2 command prompt for executing below commands

go to windows start > run > type db2cmd

    2) Enter the command in the command window

    db2 list utilities show detail

above command will tell you the current status of the restore

    3) If the command in step 2 doesn’t return anything then run below command

db2 rollforward db <db_name> query status

this command will show you the rollforward status and you can act accordingly

    4) you can also try making a connection to the database and check the message and act accordingly
    db2 connect to <db_name>
    5) Look for restore start and complete message in the db2diag.log file. You can find the location using below command at the command window
    db2 get dbm cfg|findstr /I “diag”
    6) Look for messages logged in the windows event viewer

Couple of other things that you might be interested to know is that DB2 V8.1 is very old version and is officially unsupported by IBM unless you have a extended license support. Also it will be a good idea to apply recent fix pack to your database and be a current level.
Still you have queries and want to know more, you can contact me and I will be more than happy to assist you further.

    Cheers, Vijay
