What are some checkdisk utility programs I can use?

There was a power failure due to which my computer restarts , at restart it scan(disk check) for any damage by running checkdisk utility but the problem is while checking drive c: its hangs up! so to start the computer i have to skip disk checking and start the computer.

Now , while running i got the message that there are some corrupt files and need a disk check utility to run , I had run this on command prompt on windows , but it does not repair the thing (might be files are in use) , i cannot run disk check at startup because its hang up my computer.

So please tell me some best utilty (either paid or free) that i can use to remair my hard drive. I donot want to reformat the disk and install windows again.

I use something called TuneUp Utilities which I find good generally for maintenance of my computer. Be aware though when you say running checkdisk on startup hangs up your computer, it can take a long time to run.

You might want to consider checking your disk while it is in read-only mode. And to do that you have to boot your computer from outside your windows installation.

A very well known "utility" for that is Knoppix which is Linux based and often used to fix and diagnose broken computer. It's downloadable for free or you can often get it buy buying Linux magazines that come with DVD. No installation required, just boot from the DVD.

I will try these utilites ,also try to leave the checkdisk at startup for long as per your suggestion
