looking for release dll in debug compile

Ever since I installed VS2008 SP1 I get errors like the one below
where it's looking in the release folder for a project reference
during a debug compile. If I rebuild all it works just fine. I
verified that the solution build configuration is fine. Anybody else
    seeing this issue?

    Error 1 Metadata file 'C:\workspace\P roduct\Projects \Proj1\bin\Rele ase
\Proj1.dll' could not be found Proj2

I've never run into this problem.
Try to compile in release mode first, what happens?

Hi there, it's because you have created a reference to an assembly (dll
or exe) instead of a project. Remove the reference and re-add it as a
      project reference

That was my first thought. Unfortunately, that isn't the problem.
