Ajax stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. It runs client-side and allows you to make asynchronous requests to the server. This technology cannot access a database to validate user credentials. You must implement server-side code (C# or VB.NET in this case) to validate the user's credentials against the database.
You can make an asynchronous request to the server in ASP.NET using the ASP.NET UpdatePanel. Anything within the UpdatePanel will be asynchronously sent to the server and only that part of the page is refreshed when the response returns to the browser.
This means that the page will a lot smoother upon returning.
So, by placing your login controls into an UpdatePanel you can use Ajax to send an asynchronous request to the server so that your server-side code (C#/VB.NET) can authentication the user.
