so when you click edit on your current grid view, you want to open up another page with that rows information and have it be editable?

can you please be a little more clear as to what you want it to do?

Yes i want that rows information in another page. I don't want inline editing.

can you get the record number of that row from the old page, and then do a select on that record number on the new page? You can pass that record number by query string.

What you want to do is implement a method that handles the Row Editing event. In this method you want to retrieve the information from the row that was selected for editing...I recommend storing all of the information into a custom Object meant for passing this information between pages (in your case I'd probably name this class Student). Once you've taken all of the information from the row and used that information to populate the Object you would store the Object into Session so that it can be accessed on the next page. After you've done this, redirect the user to the page for editing.

For more information on how to use Session please see the insight about Session: how to pass information between pages

Aside from that, your question is pretty straight forward.
