I'm not aware of any easy way to do this in .NET.
However, the next version of Aspose will have precisely this functionality
built-in:
It's currently in advanced beta and, in my experience, already works
perfectly. Obviously, I would never suggest the use of beta software in a
production environment, but you might like to drop them a line to get an
update on the expected release date...
Alternatively, does the thumbnail *have* to be an image? What about PDF? The
Aspose products will allow you to export the first page of any version of
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files without the need to have Microsoft Office
installed, and save it as a PDF document in just a couple of lines.

I would need to convert Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
uploaded to a server to jpg or other img format to be used as a
preview image in asp.net application. I would need only an image of
the document's first page.

Is this possible to do?
