can't see templates in template edit mode

Hello,

Any ideas why, when in design mode I open the template editor on a datalist
or gridview, the table surrounding either type of object will become so
short and collapsed that I can no longer see the edited object depending on
how far down the page it is positioned? This happens on all of my pages but
varies to the degree that it collapses the surrounding table.
