Why does a table add a number to the end--in Relationships layout?

I have a table name customers and when I add the table to the "Relationsh ips" layout the table displays as customers_1.

Can someone explain why does this happens?

because you already have that table shown in the relationships window; thus, inorder for Access to be able to track the second (third, fourth, etc...) addition of that table to the relationships tool Access appends a sequence number to the table name to make it unique.

You will see this same behaviour whenever a table appears in a query more than once too.
